Jadyn Edwards Named MW Offensive Player of the Week

by Frank Mercogliano

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Jadyn Edwards, who recorded seven points on the week as New Mexico won the GCU Tournament in Phoenix, was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week.  It marks the second straight week that a Lobo picked up a weekly honor as Emily Johnson was named MW Defensive Player of the Week last week.

She was joined in the weekly honors by San Diego State’s Alexa Madueno, who was named Defensive Player of the Week and San Diego State’s Denise Castro, who was named Freshman of the Week.

Edwards, a senior from Mill Creek, Washington, had a part in half of New Mexico’s goals this week.  On Thursday against Northern Arizona, Edwards recorded UNM’s first hat trick in two years (since she herself did it against San Diego State on November 1, 2019) as she scored twice in the first 20 minutes to give UNM a 2-0 lead.  Up 5-2, she closed out the scoring and finished off her hat trick with 17 minutes left, the final goal of a 6-2 win.  Against Grand Canyon, which entered the match at 6-1, she assisted on the opening and eventual game-winning goal in UNM’s 2-0 win over GCU that gave UNM the tournament title.

Edwards, the league leader in shots, took 13 in the two games, with nine on net.  She was one of four Lobos to be named to the All-Tournament team.  Edwards leads UNM in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10 points.  The Lobos head to Las Cruces for a Rio Grande Rivalry match at New Mexico State.
