Jerrick Reed Named to Preseason Paycom Jim Thorpe Watch List
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Jerrick Reed II, who was named a preseason All-Mountain West selection, has been honored as one of 40 players named to the prestigious Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) and Jim Thorpe Association.
The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee whose members compile a list of up to 50 players. This list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons may be added as the season progresses. Reed is one of four Mountain West student-athletes on the list.
Reed started five games last season and played in all seven. He finished fourth on the team in tackles with 33 and led the team in interceptions with four. Those four picks placed him first in the Mountain West in interceptions and tied for eighth nationally in total interceptions. He also finished fifth nationally in interceptions per game and he added three PBUs, a TFL and had a fumble recovery. He picked off two passes against Hawai’i. He was named preseason All-Mountain West on July 22 and he was named to the College Football America Preseason Group of 5 team on Sunday, July 25.
The watch list field will be narrowed to 10 to 15 semifinalists in October, and the three finalists will be unveiled in late November. Brian Urlacher was a finalist for the Thorpe Award in 1999.
The winner will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show. Other recognized National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) awards announced include the Bednarik Award, Maxwell Award, Mackey Award, Rimington Trophy, Lou Groza Award, Ray Guy Award, Bronko Nagurski Award, Outland Trophy, Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, Biletnikoff Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Doak Walker Award and Walter Camp Award.
The official presentation of the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award takes place in Oklahoma City, following ESPN’s live presentation at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The current winner and all former winners are invited each year to celebrate. Over 600 supporters attend the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Banquet each year, including many celebrities and dignitaries.
