Lobos Send 13 Athletes to the NCAA West Regionals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Thirteen track and field athletes from The University of New Mexico will represent the school and state in the NCAA West Regional tournament, tabbed to take place Wednesday through Saturday in College Station, Texas. Events for UNM will start Thursday.

The top 12 competitors from each individual event will advance from the Preliminary Rounds to the NCAA Championship, which will take place June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.

On the women’s side, ten athletes qualified in seven different events. Kicking off for the Lobos will be Steffi Jones in the women’s 1,500m run at 5:30 p.m. MT. Tianna Holmes will then compete in the women’s 400m and 200m, tabbed to take place at 6:25 p.m. MT and 7:45 p.m. MT respectively. Closing out the UNM events on Thursday will be Hannah Miller in the women’s 10k, which will start at 8:10 p.m. MT.

The men are set to compete on Friday, starting with Mountain West Champion Aidan Quinn in the men’s triple jump, which will start at 2:15 p.m. MT. Mountain West Champion Awet Yohannes will then compete in the men’s 3,000m Steeplechase at 5:10 p.m. MT, and Abdirizak Ibrahim will close out the Lobos’ events for the day with the 5,000m run at 7:30 p.m. MT.

Kicking off the Saturday competition will be Mountain West Champion Jamari Drake in the women’s high jump, set to take place at Noon MT. Earlier this season, Drake made program history in the event after clearing the 1.81m (5-11.25) mark at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open. Four Lobos will be competing in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at 5:10 p.m. MT, Charlotte Prouse, Adva Cohen, Elise Thorner, and Andrea Modin Engesæth.

Amelia Mazza Downie, Hannah Miller, and Gracelyn Larkin will close out the meet for the Lobos at 7:30 p.m. MT in the women’s 5,000m run.
