Lobos Sweep San Jose State Series, Extend Six-Game Win Streak

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The University of New Mexico baseball team earned its second sweep in a row, this time over San Jose State, after posting an 8-4 win over the Spartans on Sunday. Leading the Lobos in the sweep was Harry Fullerton, who went three-for-four from the plate with four RBIs and an extra-base hit in game three. Fullerton delivered a two-RBI double in the sixth inning, which regained a lead for the Lobos that would not be relinquished.

Mack Chambers was the first to score in the game, making it home off a stolen-base attempt by Kyler Castillo in the first inning. Fullerton made it a 2-0 lead in the second inning after singling to left field, scoring Connor Mang.

The Spartans scored a run in the fourth, but the Lobos mitigated that with a run in the top of the fifth as Chambers grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Chase Weissenborn on the play.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans took the lead as they scored two, making it a 3-4 ball game. The equalizing and lead-earning runs were then brought in in the next inning by Fullerton, who doubled to left field, scoring both Mang and Lance Russell. In the same inning, Shane Podsednik increased the lead after grounding out to the second baseman, scoring Willie Cano on the play.

Fullerton kept his hot-hitting going in the eighth inning as he again singled up the left-field, scoring Mang. Chambers brought in the final run in the ninth inning after sending a sacrifice fly out to left field with Weissenborn scoring on the play.

Riley Egloff earned his first start of the season on the mound, pitching for a total of 4.2 innings. Riley kept the Spartans scoreless through three innings, striking out three along the way. Isiah Campa earned the win for the Lobos, pitching an inning and striking out one. Campa improves to 3-2 on the season.

Both Mang and Cano went one-for-two from the plate, scoring three and one runs, respectively. Scheider and Castillo both finished the day with a hit.

The Lobos will now return home to host San Diego State in the final series of the season, tabbed to take place May 28-29. The three-game series will start with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. MT on Friday. The final game of the season, and head coach Ray Birmingham’s final game of his career, will take place on Saturday at Noon at Santa Ana Star Field. More information to come on the upcoming series.
