Women's Golf Finishes Round One of NCAA Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Through the first round of NCAA Regional competition, The University of New Mexico women’s golf team sits 16th overall with a score of +22 in Columbus on Monday.

The teams experienced a two-hour tee off delay Monday after Sunday’s practice round was rained out.

The Lobos will resume competition with round two on Tuesday at 7:50 a.m. MT (9:50 a.m. ET) followed by the third and final round on Wednesday.

“The course is playing longer because of the rains,” head coach Jill Trujillo said. “Our short game needs to be much sharper tomorrow to have a decent round.”

The top six teams and the top three individuals after all three rounds are completed will advance from each regional competition. While UNM has 19 strokes to make up to be in contention, the Lobos are no stranger to comebacks as they posted a 15-stroke comeback to overcome an 11-stroke deficit and win the Mountain West Tournament.

Sophomore Lauren Lehigh, who tied for first overall in the 2021 Mountain West Championships before being edged in a playoff for the title, leads UNM with a score of 76 in round one (+4). she is tied for 53rd but is just four shots out of 15th and eight shots out of first.

Lehigh showed consistency through round one with 14 pars, tied for eighth in the field.

Lehigh led all five Lobos who finished just one stroke apart: Lehigh (76, +4), sophomore Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana (77, +5), freshman Myah McDonald (78, +6), senior Caroline Jansson (79, +7) and senior Serena Chon (80, +8).

Lertsadwattana and Jansson lead the team in birdies with two apiece while McDonald and Chon each registered one in the first round.

McDonald and Lertsadwattana lead the team and are tied for fourth overall in par-3 scoring (2.75, -1).
