Lobos Drop Final Game of Air Force Series

USAFA, Colo. — The University of New Mexico baseball team delivered three home runs in three innings, but it was not enough to change the momentum of the game and ultimately fell 3-10 to Air Force. The Lobos (9-23, 6-15 MW) split the series 3-3 after sweeping the Falcons (20-18, 12-12 MW) earlier this season at home.

“These boys have been on the road 75 percent of the season and in COVID quarantine for almost 70 days, not including the four months back home in between during the height of COVID,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “It will be good to play at home.”

The Falcons started off hot, which forced the Lobos to play catchup through the entirety of the game. In the fourth inning, the Lobos got on the board as Kyler Castillo delivered his sixth home run of the season and his second of the series. Castillo finished the game going two-for-five from the plate.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lobos turned their 29th double play this season with a 4-6-3 beauty by the middle infield of Weissenborn and Chambers to Mang at first base.

In the next frame, Mack Chambers hit a home run through the left field, also his sixth of the season and second in the series. Chambers led the team offensively with three hits on four at-bats, including a home run and a double.

Continuing the home run streak was Jack Silverman in the sixth inning, bringing the game to 3-8. Silverman now leads the Lobos in home runs and is ranked eighth in the Mountain West with seven.

Riley Egloff spent 4.1 innings on the mound for the Lobos and held the Falcon offense to just two runs during his time on the mound. Shane Podsednik, Jacob Gutierrez, Willie Cano, and Lance Russell all went one-for-four on the plate.

The Lobos will now return to Albuquerque to host Utah Valley for three games starting Friday, May 14 at 6 p.m. MT. The two will face off again Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at Noon.
