TCU Up Next for the Lobos in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

WILSON, N.C. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team will play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history on Friday at 6 p.m. EST (4 p.m. MT) at Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson, North Carolina. The Lobos (10-1-1) will face fourth-seeded TCU (11-1-1), who used to be in the Mountain West from 2005-2011. The Lobos currently lead the series 7-3-3, with their last meeting being on Aug. 17, 2012.

On Tuesday night, the Lobos made history, being the first women’s soccer team from New Mexico to advance in the NCAA Tournament. The Lobos edged out Navy 1(4)-1(2) in a penalty shootout thriller. Junior Alesia Garcia scored the equalizer in the 71st minute, allowing the Lobos to fight on through two overtimes and a PK shootout. With Emily Johnson in goal, the Lobos took down the Midshipmen (4-4-3) 4-2 in the penalty kicks.

The winner of Friday’s match will advance to the Sweet 16 on May 5 and will face the winner of 13th-seeded Georgetown and South Carolina.
