ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is headed to Utah for its final tune up before the 2021 Mountain West Tournament as the Lobos are set to tee off the PING Cougar Classic hosted by BYU on Friday in Provo, Utah.

The squad will compete at the 7,142-yard, par-72 course at Riverside Country Club with two rounds set to begin at 8 a.m. MT followed by the third round on Saturday.

The Lobos will compete in a field of 19 teams including six fellow Mountain West squads in Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Nevada, UNLV and Wyoming.

No. 29 New Mexico is one of two teams ranked in the top 30 in the nation that will be in attendance as San Francisco ranks No. 28.

Also competing in the field will be BYU, San Diego, St. Mary’s, Utah, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Denver, UVU, Gonzaga, Dixie State and New Mexico State.

The Lobos enter the weekend’s contest coming off of an eighth-place finish in a tough field full of eight top-35 teams. Sophomore Albert Boneta earned his first collegiate victory with a three-way tie for first. Boneta registered his career-best final score of -12 after shooting a 65 in round one followed by a 70 in round two and a 66 in round three.

UNM’s lineup for the PING Cougar Classic will consist of junior Sam Choi, who is ranked No. 18 in the nation, Boneta, freshman Bastien Amat, freshman Matthew Watkins and junior Brandon Shong.

Boneta has moved up in the rankings following his victory last week as he is now at No. 122. Watkins enjoyed his collegiate debut last week in which he registered the only eagle in the tournament.

The Lobos are scheduled to tee off at 9:20 a.m. MT on hole #1. Fans will be able to follow live via GolfStat.
