COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sophomore Albert Boneta of the University of New Mexico men’s golf team has been named Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the week this week after an outstanding performance at the Thunderbird Collegiate.

Boneta earned his first collegiate victory at the tournament in a three-way tie with a career-best final score of -12. He helped the Lobos to an eighth-place finish in a strong field that included eight teams ranked in the top 35 in the country by GolfStat.

Boneta registered a 65 (-6) in round one, a 70 (-1) in round two and a 66 (-5) in round three for a final score of 201. He entered the final round tied for ninth place, came out of the back nine even but made up ground with five birdies on the front nine to finish -5 on the round and tie for the win.

The sophomore tied for fifth overall in birdies with 16, finished tied for third in par-3 scoring (2.92, -1) and also tied for seventh in par-4 scoring (3.82, -6).

The weekly honor marks the first for Boneta while it is the second for a Lobo this season after junior Sam Choi received the accolade earlier this season. Boneta, Choi and the rest of the Lobos will return to action Friday, April 23, at the PING Cougar Classic hosted by BYU.
