Lobos Second Through First Two Rounds at MW Championships

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Freshman Myah McDonald and sophomore Lauren Lehigh are tied for fifth through day one of the 2021 Mountain West Women’s Golf Championships on Tuesday as the Lobos sit tied for second place overall. The final round of the MW Championships is set to tee off on Wednesday at 8 a.m. MT while UNM tees off at 9:30.

New Mexico is tied for second with a score of 593 (+17), 11 strokes behind first-place San Diego State (582, +6). The Lobos are tied with Fresno State while San José State and Nevada are tied for fourth, nine strokes behind with scores of 602 (+26).

“We saw a lot of good things out there today, but we gave away too many shots the first round,” head coach Jill Trujillo said. “We’ll have to take it low tomorrow. Lauren and Myah had solid rounds and their consistent play helped keep us toward the top.”

Three Lobos are in the top 15 of the field as McDonald and Lehigh are just four strokes behind the tournament leader, Sara Kjellker of San Diego State (142, -2), while sophomore Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana is in 11th through the first two rounds.

Both McDonald and Lehigh registered a score of 145 (+1) through the first two rounds, carding scores of 73 and 72 in rounds one and two, respectively. The pair is just one stroke out of third and shot one stroke better than Kjellker in round two, but it was the Aztec’s 69 in round one that kept her at the top.

Lertsadwattana shot a 76 in round one and shaved off two strokes for a 74 in round two to finish the two rounds +4. She is second in the field in par-5 scoring (4.50, -4).

Seniors Serena Chon and Caroline Jansson are tied for 30th overall with a two-round score of 156 (+12). Chon shot a 79 in round one and shaved two strokes off in round two while Jansson shot a 78 in both rounds.

As a team the Lobos rank first overall in par-5 scoring (4.90, -4), second in pars (115) and third in birdies (20).

The 2021 MW Championships will wrap up Wednesday, April 21,  with the third round starting at 7 a.m. PT/8 a.m. MT
