COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Last week it was Raul Dobai. This week, it’s Dominic West. West, who went 4-0 as UNM swept both UNLV and San Diego State, was named Mountain West Player of the Week. It’s the second straight week a Lobo earned the honor, and it’s the third time that West has been so honored by the league.
Not only a senior leader but the teams’ emotional one as well, West and partner Sergio Molina picked up two doubles wins, including a doubles point clincher against UNLV. West and Molina, who are now 10-2 overall in doubles, have won five straight matches. The duo, who play at No. 1, actually slid in the national doubles rankings from 59 to 87 despite the five straight wins.
In singles, West made sure UNM kept its lead after doubles. Against UNLV, he took a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles to make it 2-0 UNM, and then against San Diego State playing at No. 2 again, he won 6-4, 6-1 to give UNM a 3-0 lead.
The Lobos, 6-8 overall and 4-0 in the Mountain West, have won 13 straight Mountain West regular season matches and haven’t lost a Mountain West match since April 13, 2018, more than three years ago. The Lobos are alone in first place with a one game lead over both UNLV and Fresno State, and UNM has already played and defeated both of those teams.
UNM travels to take on Boise State and Utah State on the road. UNM is at Boise State Friday at noon and at Utah State Sunday at 11 am.
