Lobos Fall in Final Game to Wolf Pack
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico had its chances on Sunday’s series finale with Nevada, leaving nine runners on base, ultimately falling 7-0 to the Wolf Pack.
Peyton Robinson led the Lobos with two of UNM’s six hits, with Cameryn O’Grady, Andrea Howard, Rachael Hathoot and Lauren Wilmert each tallying one.
UNM had six runners reach base via walks, led by two apiece for Taryn Young at the bottom of the Lobo lineup and Briana Martinez, with Howard and Reyan Tuck each recording one walk.
After a quick inning in the circle for Lobo starter Emma Guindon, in which the right-handed pitcher threw just five pitches, the Lobos had their first opportunity to score with O’Grady getting the first it of the game with a single to center. Howard walked on a full count to move O’Grady to second, and the senior shortstop advanced to third on Hathoot’s at-bat after tagging up on the play. Howard stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the chance.
Nevada took the lead in the top of the second on a three-run home run by Sam Oliver, its first hit of the game.
UNM had another chance to break into the run column in the fourth following a one-out double to the gap in right center for Hathoot. The sophomore second baseman moved to third on a wild pitch during Martinez’s at-bat, with Martinez eventually drawing a walk to put runners on the corners. Wilmert hit the first pitch she saw deep to right with the Wolf Pack outfielder making the catch, and doubled up Martinez at first who was running on the play to end the inning.
The Wolf Pack added a run in the top of the fifth, and in the bottom of the fifth, the Lobos left the bases loaded following a runner’s interference call on a Howard grounder to second for the third out. Nevada added three final runs in the top of the sixth.
New Mexico had two batters reach base in the sixth without any runner able to cross home plate, and in the seventh, Young led off with a walk on a full count followed by a Robinson bunt to the pitcher in which the Nevada pitcher made an errant throw to first that got away and allowed Young to run to third. With runners again on the corners, Howard flied out to center and Robinson was thrown out attempting to tag from first to end the game.
Guindon threw 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and one walk, allowing six hits and five earned runs, while Ashlyn Roberts entered in relief to pitch 2.0 innings, striking out three batters with no walks and allowed one run on two hits.
The Lobos return to the road for their next Mountain West series, traveling to UNLV for a three-game series that starts on Saturday, April 17.
