Lobos Close Out Regular Season with Two-Game Home-Stand
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team will close out its conference season with a two-game home-stand this weekend. First, the Lobos will host Wyoming on Friday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. for the team’s senior night, honoring six Lobo seniors. The Lobos will then close out the regular season versus Colorado State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Lobos have already clinched a spot in the Mountain West Regular Season Championships, tabbed to take place on April 17. This weekend will determine who plays host in the Championship game, and if the Lobos win at least one game this weekend, it will be UNM.
The team has outscored opponents 20-2 through eight games, garnering a 7-1 record. The Lobos had defeated both Wyoming and Colorado State earlier in the season, taking down the Cowgirls 1-0 and the Rams 4-1.
Both redshirt-senior Gwen Maly and junior Alesia Garcia are atop the Mountain West in goals (6), as they are both tied for first place. Maly started the season scoring at least one goal in each of the first five games. Garcia had a historic night on March 19 versus Colorado College, posting a total of four goals through the match. This was the first time in UNM history that a Lobo scored four goals at home, and the first time in 25 years that it was done by a UNM player.
The team has posted six shutouts through eight games, and Emily Johnson has been a rock for the Lobos in the goal. The redshirt senior currently has a Mountain West-leading .25 goals-against average, the lowest in UNM history.
