ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team hits the road to face Utah State after posting three shutouts at home over the last two weeks. The Lobos have now improved to 5-0 on the season, shutting out four teams along the way.
This is the longest shutout streak for the Lobos (4) since the 2012 season, where the Lobos shutout five teams in a row. The last time the Lobos shutout four teams in their first five games was in 2009. Previously, that stat had been held by the 1993 inaugural Lobo team, who went on to post five shutouts in a row to start the season.
Redshirt-senior Gwen Maly is currently on a five-game scoring streak, posting six goals on the season and at least one in every game. Maly currently leads the Mountain West in points (13) and goals (6).
Last week, junior Alesia Garcia was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week after making UNM history, posting four goals in New Mexico’s 5-0 shutout of Colorado College. This was the first time ever that a Lobo posted four goals in a game at home. The last time a UNM player posted four goals was in 1996 when Laurie Hedgedorn scored four at South Alabama.
The Lobos look to continue their undefeated streak in Logan, Utah. New Mexico took down the Aggies 3-0 earlier this season and currently lead the series 6-1-2, posting a 3-0-1 record on the road.
