COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Justin Armbruester of the University of New Mexico baseball team has been named the Mountain West Pitcher or the Week for the second week in a row. The senior from Sammamish, Wash., pitched 6.2 innings in New Mexico’s 6-4 victory over Kansas State on Saturday, March 20.
“To do what Justin did at Kansas State with the wind blowing out was very impressive,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “He is a special kid.”
Armbruester struck out eight batters, allowing just one run, which is the second-lowest for Armbruester this season. Last week, the senior started on the mound in game two of the Lobos’ doubleheader versus Fresno State on March 13. Armbruester pitched a total of 9.0 innings, struck out 17 players, and held the Bulldogs to just two hits. The 17 strikeouts are the second-most in a single game nationally this season. The senior threw a strike on 70-percent of his pitches against the Bulldogs.
Armbruester and the Lobos will now return to New Mexico to host the Nevada Wolfpack March 27-28. The three-game series will start with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. MT on Saturday at Santa Ana Star Field. Fans will be allowed to attend at a limited capacity. To keep up with the Lobos, follow @UNMLoboBaseball on Twitter.
