Rough Weather Renders Lobos Seventh

TUCSON, Ariz. — Weather at the end of round three of the N.I.T. hosted by Arizona on Sunday resulted in The University of New Mexico men’s golf team dropping from third to seventh after the final round. The blustery conditions resulted in UNM carding 21 more strokes from round two to round three.

The Lobos were one of the last teams to finish as the weather picked up. UNM finished -14 through three rounds with scores of 277, 276 and 297. No. 8 Oklahoma State took the win with a score of 817 (-47) followed by No. 2 Oklahoma (821, -43) and No. 6 Texas (833, -31). The Lobos were the top Mountain West finisher.

Junior Sam Choi finished tied for fourth overall in a field of 104 with a score of 204 (-12). He was just three strokes out of first place and registered a season-best 67 in round two followed by a 69 in round three.

Choi finished tied for first overall in par-3 scoring (2.83, -2) and tied for sixth in par-5 scoring (4.25, -9). He also posted the third-most birdies on the competition with 18.

After ranking second through two rounds, junior Brandon Shong finished tied for 17th after two straight rounds of 67 before carding a 76 in round three for a final score of 210 (-6).

Freshman Bastien Amat finished with an even 216 after a 71 in both of the first two rounds and a 74 in round three. He was followed by redshirt-senior Ross Sinclair, who competed as an individual. Sinclair was +4 with scores of 79, 67 and 74.

The final two Lobos in the lineup, sophomore Albert Boneta and junior Ignacio Arcaya, came in at T79th (+6) and and T84th (+7), respectively.

Boneta ranked tied for fifth overall in pars with 37 and was one of just 27 competitors to register an eagle.

The Lobos are set to return to action on April 16 at the Thunderbird Collegiate hosted by Arizona State in Phoenix, Ariz.
