Armbruester Named MW Pitcher of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — After an impressive 17 strikeout game versus Fresno State on Saturday, Justin Armbruester of the University of New Mexico’s baseball team has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week.

The senior from Sammamish, Wash., started on the mound in game two of the Lobos’ doubleheader versus Fresno State on Saturday. Armbruester pitched a total of 9.0 innings, striking out 17 players, holding the Bulldogs to just two hits. The 17 strikeouts are the second-most in a single game nationally this season. The senior threw a strike on 70-percent of his pitches against the Bulldogs.

“Justin Armbruester pitched his tail off,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “That was one of the best pitching performances I have seen at UNM.”

The last time a Lobo pitcher posted 17 or more strikeouts in a game was on Feb. 17, 1998. That pitcher was Jim Serrano versus Point Lomas. Armbruester is just the seventh pitcher in UNM history to tally 17 or more strikeouts in a game.

Armbruester and the Lobos will now head to Manhattan, Kan. for a three-day three-game series versus K-State. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+, and live stats will be available. ESPN Radio 101.7 The TEAM will be covering each game in the series for local fans.
