UNM Falls in Series Finale at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas— The University of New Mexico softball team dropped its final game of the three-game series at Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the Red Raiders.

The Lobos managed just two hits in the contest, with Peyton Robinson recording UNM’s first hit of the game in the third on a one-out bunt and Izabella Owen accounting the second hit, a single to right in the sixth.

UNM was able to get base runners on against TTU, with Briana Martinez walking in the second, reaching on an error in the fourth and Cameryn O’Grady being hit by a pitch in two plate appearances, however, the Lobos couldn’t move anyone past second base.

The Lobos’ first chance to score occurred in the second inning, with Martinez advancing to second on a Lauren Wilmert ground ball to shortstop. A liner to left field left the run on base. Robinson’s single in the third was followed by O’Grady’s first hit-by-pitch that put two on with one out, but consecutive fly outs ended the inning.

A throwing error allowed Martinez to reach in the top of the fourth, with the sophomore outfielder able to move to second on a Wilmert groundout to third, but again was left standing on second.

UNM had runners reach in the fifth (an O’Grady hit-by-pitch) and the sixth (Owen’s one-out single) but both runners couldn’t be brought around to score.

In total, UNM left a total of five runners on base, compared to TTU’s seven.

The lone run in the game came in the bottom of the second with a one-out double, a single to center that moved the runner to third and a sacrifice fly to left.

Emma Guindon pitched another complete game, allowing just one run on nine hits while striking out a season-high five batters and walking just one on 92 pitches thrown.

The Lobos have one non-conference series remaining against current No. 10/11 Texas, set for Friday and Saturday in Austin, Texas.
