ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is headed to Las Vegas to take on sixth-seed Fresno State in the first round of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Tournament on Wednesday. The Lobos and the Bulldogs are scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. MT on the Mountain West Network.
The Lobos have played just five games in the first round of the conference tournament in their tenure in the Mountain West and are 2-3 in those games.
The Lobos have faced Fresno State twice in the Mountain West Tournament, the teams have split, 1-1. UNM and Fresno State have seen each other a total of four times throughout program history in the postseason, the Lobos are 3-1 in those meetings.
Last time New Mexico saw the Bulldogs in Las Vegas was almost exactly four years ago on March 9, 2017. Fresno State won the contest, 65-60.
New Mexico enters the game with 2021 All-Mountain West Third Team honoree Makuach Maluach leading the way. Maluach has posted 20+ points over the last four games and has only scored less than 10 four times on the entire season. He is averaging 15.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, 15.9 and 6.2 in conference play.
