COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Posting two goals and one assist over the first week of play, redshirt senior Gwen Maly currently leads the Mountain West in points (5), averaging 2.5 points per game. The redshirt senior posted her second goal of the season in UNM’s 1-0 win over Wyoming. Her goal in the 33rd minute served as the game-winning goal for the Lobos.
“Gwen was exactly one year from an ACL injury that we thought was going to end her Lobo career when she scored on Friday night,” said head coach Heather Dyche. “The emotions in getting to see her play, and at such a high level, are overwhelming for our entire program. Gwen has been such a valuable member, on and off the field, for our program and I’m so incredibly happy for her.”
In her first appearance of the 2020-21 season, Maly scored a goal in the 41st minute versus Colorado State, tying the game and creating momentum for the team. Maly also provided an assist in the shot that allowed the Lobos to take a 2-1 lead over the Rams. Maly currently leads the conference in points per game and is tied for first in goals.
The scoring sequence that led to Maly’s first goal of the season started with the ball in the right-field as freshman Paige Satterlee delivered a pass to Maly inside the box, drawing the CSU goalie up and allowing the senior to drive the ball to the back of the net. This goal tied the game as the Rams had scored in the 22nd minute.
Maly will join her teammates in hosting their home-opener versus Utah State on March 13. The game is set to take place at 6:30 p.m., and fans will be allowed at a limited capacity.
