Lobos Fall to NAU in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Down one major contributor, the Lobos scuffled in Flagstaff to a red-hot Northern Arizona team that improved to 5-0 at home, falling 4-0.  The Lobos dropped to 4-2 on the season, and now head for an 11 a.m. match on Monday in Phoenix against Grand Canyon.

UNM lost the doubles point 2-1, getting a win at No. 1 doubles by Natasha Munday and Hsuan Huang 6-4, the Lobos lost the other two matches and fell behind 1-0.  UNM then went into singles without 4-1 Yue Lin “Polly” Chen, and couldn’t get on the board before the match was clinched by NAU.

The Lobos were hurt by their opening set struggles as three Lobos fell 6-0 in the first set, and UNM just couldn’t recover.  The match ended when Huang, who lost her first set, bounced all the way back from a first set 6-0 loss to force a tiebreaker at 6-6, but she lost 7-5 in the tiebreaker, ending the match.

UNM’s Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang was in her third set when the match ended, and UNM’s other two matches were headed for tiebreakers as well.

UNM (4-2) heads to Grand Canyon to end its short two-match road trip with a Monday morning 11 a.m. match in Phoenix.

NOTE: UNM was actually 4-2 last week, but the ITA vacated a 4-3 loss to UTSA due to an illegal lineup.  The individual results still count, but there is now no team score.
