Lobos Drop First Match of the Year, Fall to Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas — All good things must come to an end, and so it was for New Mexico’s women’s tennis team, which ran into a very good Texas Tech team.  The Lobos were game but ultimately lost 4-0, dropping their first match of the year to fall to 3-1 overall.  The Lobos will now head to El Paso for a few nights before taking on UTEP on Wednesday and then rival New Mexico State on Thursday at UTEP.

For UNM, the Lobos fell behind 1-0 after doubles, the first time this season UNM didn’t pick up a doubles win.  From there, Texas Tech was able to take the three singles matches it needed to clinch the win.  UNM fell into a 2-0 hole when Hsuan Huang had to retire from her match at No. 3 singles, down 6-0, 4-1.  From there, Tech needed just two more and got those wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.

UNM’s best match was put forth by No. 1 player Natasha Munday.  New to the role, she was down 6-3, 4-2 to 100th-ranked Kaitlin Stines.  UNM will now head to El Paso looking to continue its mastery over a pair of regional rivals.  UNM leads the all-time series with UTEP 34-1 and with New Mexico State 37-7.  While looking to continue that mastery, UNM will be looking for revenge, having lost 4-3 in its season opener last year.
