ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sofia Lucero, a graduate of the Anderson School of Management at UNM, has been hired as Assistant Director of Communications and will oversee publicity for Lobo Women’s Soccer, Baseball, Track and Field and Cross Country. She started in her new position on February 1.
Lucero is no stranger to UNM Athletics, working previously as a top intern in the office from 2017-19, working with women’s soccer, baseball and the Lobo basketball programs. The native of Pojoaque, New Mexico, Lucero comes back to the Lobos after working for a year with USA Basketball, where she worked on various promotional and social justice campaigns. She also handled content creation for various USA Basketball social channels as well as USABasketball.com.
“Bringing back Sofia after her successful time here a few years ago is great for our department,” said Assistant A.D. for Communications Frank Mercogliano. “Sofia is already familiar with our programs and sports, and our coaches are familiar with her. Her recommendations from USA Basketball were beyond glowing, and they were really sad to lose her so fast.”
“It’s always great to bring graduates of UNM back to campus, and she is a native New Mexican and a a life-long Lobo fan, and I think our coaches and student-athletes will benefit from the pride that she has in promoting our programs.”
Lucero is currently working on completing her Master’s of Science in Sports Management online with the University of Florida. She is specializing in Social Media from Florida’s Journalism and Communications College.
While at UNM, she was a four-year Dean’s List member. She was the president of the Student Center for the Public Trust.
