Lobos Second After Windy Day One at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — In their first outing since last spring, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is in second place out of 17 squads through one round on Monday at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Arizona.

The Lobos are second in a field of six Pac-12 teams including Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, Washington and Washington State, as well as in-state rival New Mexico State.

Three Lobos rank in the top 20 through day one including junior Sam Choi who tied for fourth with an even 71 despite the windy conditions that called for a delay in play. Choi also registered the Lobos’ only eagle carding a three on a the par-5 14th hole.

Sophomore Albert Boneta and redshirt-senior Ross Sinclair completed round one tied for 15th and 20th, respectively. Boneta shot a 74 (+3) while Sinclair carded a 75 (+4).

On the day, the Lobos were second in par-3 scoring (3.20) and in par-4 scoring (4.31). The Lobos posted 13 birdies, second only to Arizona with 15, and one eagle.

New Mexico finished round one with a score of 296 (+12) behind three-peat champion Arizona, which finished the first round with an even 284.

UNM junior transfer Brandon Shong completed round one tied for 28th shooting a 76 in his Lobo debut while freshman Bastien Amat shot a 77 to tie for 38th followed by junior Ignacio Arcaya who shot a 78 (T45th).

Tuesday’s round two of competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the first Lobo teeing off at 10:40. Fans can follow round two live stats HERE.
