ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to take on the San José State Spartans in its fifth conference series of the season starting Thursday at 1 p.m. MT in St. George, Utah. The game will be available to watch live, for free, on the Mountain West Network.

Thursday’s game will also be available to follow via Live Stats.

The Lobos (4-8, 0-8 MW) enter Thursday’s game coming off of a near upset over UNLV on Monday. UNM led for 24 minutes and the teams were tied with 5:43 to play before the Runnin’ Rebels ran away with the game.

San José State (2-10, 0-8 MW) and UNM have dropped four of their eight conference games to the same opponents in Boise State and Utah State. SJSU fell by 52 points to Boise State in game one of their series, 106-54, but dropped game two by just one point, 87-86.

The Lobos are led on the season by senior Makuach Maluach who posts 13.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. In Mountain West play, Maluach leads all scorers with 11.4 points per game while redshirt-freshman Bayron Matos leads in rebounds with 4.4 per contest.

San José State is led by two players scoring in double figures including senior Richard Washington (22.2) and junior Jalen Dalcourt (12.0). SJSU’s leading rebounder, Seneca Knight (7.3) has opted out for the remainder of the season. In conference competition, Washington boasts a 21.3 scoring average followed by Dalcourt with 10.8.

SERIES HISTORY
The Lobos lead the series against SJSU 16-3 overall including a 9-0 advantage inside The Pit. This series will be played at Dixie State in St. George, Utah which will be classified as a “neutral” contest by the NCAA. The Lobos are 2-0 over the Spartans in neutral competition.

The teams’ last meeting was on March 4, 2020 as UNM claimed a 79-66 victory in the first round of the 2020 Mountain West Tournament. UNM is 2-2 over the last four matchups including the last two straight victories. The Lobos are 5-2 over the last seven games between the teams.

THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 56-55 in his fourth year at the helm of the Lobos, 84-61 in his fifth season as a head coach. SJSU head coach Jean Prioleau is 17-85 in his fourth season with the Spartans and is 341-342 in his career.
