ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team returns to the court on Sunday for the second, and final, game of the series at UNLV looking to get back in the win column.
The Lobos lost their first game of the season on Friday afternoon to the Lady Rebels 78-60 in what was a game of two halves.
UNM (5-1, 2-1 MW) got out to a quick start and finished the quarter ahead 21-9, the fourth time this season that the Lobo defense had held an opponent to under 10 points in the opening quarter. The Lobos led at the break 43-35 but the Lady Rebels (5-5, 3-2 MW) took control of the game from the start of the third quarter, narrowing the margin and ultimately took a 57-56 lead into the final quarter. The Lobos scored just 13 points in the third quarter, and the offense couldn’t get back on track in the fourth.
LaTascya Duff led the Lobos with 17 points with Ahlise Hurst just one point behind her as the only two Lobos to reach double figures in the game. Both Lobos made four three-pointers in the game, tying a season high for Duff. As a team, UNM made 10-plus three-pointers for the fourth time this season, making 11 on Friday.
While Jaedyn De La Cerda was quiet in point production, the senior contributed with a team-high eight rebounds and four assists. Defensively, Shaiquel McGruder and Autumn Watts finished with four and two blocks, respectively, while Watts had a team-high two steals.
