Lobos Send Sparty Packing with 4-0 Shutout
Box Score | 2019-20 Season Statistics
DES MOINES, Iowa — UNM got a rare three-game doubles sweep, and then cruised in singles as UNM picked up another Power-5 conference victory, this time with a 4-0 sweep of Michigan State. The win was UNM’s fifth straight and the Lobos are now 5-4 on the season. Michigan State dropped to 5-5.
UNM scored an odd doubles point as they swept all three doubles matches. The Lobos got the first of two matches needed with a 6-3 win from Jake Trondson and Raul Dobai at No. 1 doubles. UNM led the other two matches, and it was matter of which one would finish first. In a rare occurrence, neither did.
As Dominic West and Sergio Molina were putting the finishing touches on a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, Stepan Holis and Alex Maggs were aiming to finish off a 7-5 win. Both winning points came at an identical time, giving UNM all three doubles wins, and a 1-0 lead.
From there, UNM cruised. Head coach Ben Dunbar made a swap in singles, taking out Facundo Bermejo at No. 5, which slid Rafael Abdulsalam up from No. 6 and inserted Jake Tronsdon into the lineup for the first time in singles this spring.
Trondson responded perfectly. In his first official Division I singles dual match, he hammered away a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 to get UNM a 2-0 lead. Sergio Molina then added to the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win to make it 3-0. Holis in turn picked up the clincher, just ahead of West as he won 6-4, 6-1 to clinch it.
West was up 6-3, 4-3 at the clinch, and Dobai, who clinched the win yesterday, was up 3-6, 6-3, 3-0, and Abdulsalam was about to force a third set as he was up 5-1 in the second after losing the first 6-4.
UNM now puts its five-match winning streak on the line next week with a Sunday matchup at Texas Tech at noon in Lubbock.
NOTES: Trondson and Dobai are now 8-5 in doubles this year, and they have more matches than any other Lobo doubles combo … Abdulsalam was playing at No. 5 for only the second time this season.
