Men's Golf Continues Season in Hawaii

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is gearing up to continue its spring season as it heads to the 44th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii this Thursday, Feb. 20 – Saturday, Feb. 22. The three-day tournament will take place at the 6,991-yard, par-72 Wailua Golf Course in Lihu’e, Kaua’i.

The field for the competition will be made up of 21 teams including seven Golfstat top-50 ranked squads: No. 6 Arizona, No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 14 North Carolina, No. 15 BYU, No. 28 Cal, No. 40 New Mexico and No. 43 Illinois. The rest of the field includes Cal State Fullerton, Grand Canyon, host Hawaii, Long Beach State, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, UC Irvine, UNC Wilmington, UNLV, Utah, UTEP, Virginia and Washington State.

No. 6 Arizona returns to the John A. Burns Intercollegiate as the defending champion after shooting a 24 under, 840 a season ago to land three strokes ahead of No. 10 Texas A&M (843, -21). BYU’s Peter Kuest took home the individual title last season, shooting a 10 under, 206. Kuest was also the individual champion this season at the Lobos’ home tournament, the annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Sept. 27-28, after his score of 200 (-16) marked a new course record.

The Lobos finished 13th out of the field of 20 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate a season ago, shooting four over, 868.

UNM enters the competition following a fourth-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate to open up its spring slate. The Lobos shot an 855 (+3) at the tournament and were led by sophomore Sam Choi who finished third overall to clinch a Mountain West Golfer of the Week honor. Choi shot an outstanding seven under, 206 to land just three strokes behind the first-place tie between Washington’s Henry Lee and Arizona’s Trevor Werbylo who each shot 10 under, 203.

The first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will begin Thursday at 11 a.m. MT (8 a.m. Hawaii time) and will be followed by round two on Friday and round three on Saturday. Each round will begin with a shotgun start.
