ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team (2-0) is set to play its third game in a week’s time against LeTourneau (1-0) on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. MT / 3:30 p.m. MT. The game will be a neutral contest that will take place at Rice University in Tudor Fieldhouse.
Senior Makuach Maluach enters the game just ONE point shy of 1,000 career points after wrapping up Tuesday’s game with 17 points to total 999 for his career.
The Lobos enter the game coming off of a 104-65 victory over Our Lady of the Lakes on Tuesday. LeTourneau is also coming off of a 100-point game after topping Howard Payne 100-63, also on Tuesday.
LeTourneau is entering the 2020-21 season coming off of its first ever ASC Championship. The team earned its second NCAA DIII Tournament appearance in the last three seasons and has 10 players returning from last year’s squad.
Thursday’s game will mark LaTourneau’s fifth exhibition game against an NCAA Division I team. The YellowJackets have also played Stephen F. Austin, Rice, Sam Houston State and Texas Southern.
The Rice Owls topped LETU 94-74 on Dec. 3, 10 days before the Lobos claimed a 72-61 win over Rice.
The Lobos are led by senior Makuach Maluach who is averaging 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Other double-digit scorers for UNM include junior Rod Brown (13.5) and junior Valdir Manuel (10.0).
LETU is led by junior Andrew Eberhardt who scored 31 points on Thursday while collecting 11 rebounds. Other leading scorers for the YellowJackets include freshman Deonte Jackson (16) and junior Elijah Gerber (13).
SERIES HISTORY
This game will be the first meeting between the two teams in the programs’ histories.
THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 54-47 in his fourth year at the helm of the Lobos, 82-53 in his fifth season as a head coach. LETU head coach Dan Miller is 103-60 in his seventh season with the YellowJackets and is the same in his career.
