2020-21 Men's Basketball Conference Schedule Announced
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Mountain West has officially announced the conference schedule for the 2020-21 season, the league announced Friday, subject to approval from state, county and local officials. Each Mountain West institution will play nine home games and make nine road trips during the conference season. This is the eighth year that the MW has utilized the 18-game format.
The Lobos will start conference competition on Dec. 29 with a road contest against San Diego State before returning home for a pair of games in The Pit against Wyoming (Jan. 2) and Air Force (Jan. 5).
Friday’s release represents the first phase in the 2020-21 men’s basketball schedule process. Mountain West national television partners CBS Sports and FOX Sports will now initiate a selection procedure, which will include the shifting of several games from their current Saturday and Tuesday dates. Additional announcements on television selections will be made in the coming weeks.
With 11 teams in the Mountain West, each team will play eight opponents twice, and two opponents just once throughout the conference schedule. Last season, the Lobos faced Colorado State and Utah State just once. In 2020-21, UNM will take on Fresno State just once in Fresno on Jan. 12 and Boise State at home on Feb. 9.
Each team also has two scheduled bye dates. The Lobos are scheduled to have byes on Jan. 23 and Feb. 16.
Recent Mountain West schedules have been “mirrored” schedules, meaning that the men’s teams and the women’s teams play the same opponent in the same week. This year’s schedule does not reflect the mirrored format, therefore the men’s teams and women’s teams will have different teams that they each play only once. Bye dates for both the men’s and the women’s teams are another difference in the conference scheduling for the 2020-21 season.
Additionally, the conference announced the format and game times for the 2020 MW Men’s Basketball Championship. The 10-game tournament is set to begin Wednesday, March 10 with three first-round games. The men’s quarterfinals are set for Thursday, March 11 with semifinal play on Friday, March 12. The tournament will conclude with the men’s championship game on Saturday, March 13.
Updated information on the upcoming season will be provided as more details are made available. All dates are currently subject to change and any details on stadium capacity will depend on health orders in place.
