Rookie Nicholle Toh Named MW Swimmer of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Nicholle Toh, a freshman on The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team, has been named the Mountain West’s Swimmer of the Week for her performance against New Mexico State, league officials announced, becoming just the fourth Lobo swimmer to be honored as Swimmer of the Week in the last 15 seasons.

Toh won two individual races and was a part of two relays helping UNM to 40 points in a 194-106 win over New Mexico, the largest margin of victory over the Aggies in the last 24 years.  She picked up wins in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard butterfly and she also swam the third leg of the 200-yard relay and the 400-individual medley relay.  In the 100-butterfly, she led wire to wire, and in the 200-yard butterfly, she came back from third place at the halfway mark to blow away the field by over seven seconds.

In the 400-yard relay, she led UNM in another comeback, as she was in third when she left the blocks and first when she passed the race off to anchor Hedda Oritsland.

It’s the 10th time in UNM’s history that a Lobo swimmer earned Swimmer of the Week, and Toh is the first freshman Lobo to be named Swimmer of the Week since the 2002-03 season, when Robyn Miller was named Swimmer of the Week on January 15, 2003.  Overall, UNM has had a swimmer or diving honors as the athlete of the week by the Mountain West 44 times.

The Lobos return to the pool on Friday when they travel to Nevada to face the Wolf Pack at 5 p.m.
