Lobos Open Spring Season at Arizona Intercollegiate

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is gearing up to begin its spring season at the 40th annual Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona this Monday, Jan. 27 – Tuesday, Jan. 28. The tournament will take place at the 7,292-yard, par-71 course at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.

The field for the tournament will consist of 14 teams including host Arizona, Arkansas Little Rock, Baylor, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Louisiana-Monroe, Mississippi State, New Mexico, in-state rival New Mexico State, St. Mary’s, UTEP, UTSA, Washington and Washington State. UNM enters the competition being one of the five teams in the field ranked among Golfstat’s top-50 at No. 36. The rest of the ranked teams include No. 11 Arizona, No. 12 Baylor, No. 17 Washington and No. 44 Long Beach State.

Host Arizona has earned its No. 11 spot after wrapping up its fall season with a second-place finish and three third-place finishes. The Wildcats also enter the tournament as two-time defending champions at the Arizona Intercollegiate, having finished 37 under, 815 a season ago. The Lobos landed in seventh last year at the competition, shooting a score of 16 under, 836.

Of Arizona’s third-place finishes, one was earned at UNM’s annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Sept. 27-28 at the UNM Championship Golf Course. The Lobos claimed the overall victory at the Tucker after a tie for first in the regular competition sent the Lobos and BYU’s Cougars to a single-hole playoff. The Lobos shot a three-round total of 10 under, 854 at the tournament while Arizona finished two strokes behind at eight under, 856.

UNM begins its spring slate having one win and a pair of top-5 finishes under its belt. Sophomore Sam Choi leads the team with an average score of 71.71 across his 14 rounds while junior Galven Green is close behind with an average score of 72.77. Both Choi and Green have earned themselves top-5 finishes so far this season, Green’s was a tie for second at the Tucker while Choi earned a fifth-place spot at the Maridoe Intercollegiate on Oct. 6-8.

Round one of the Arizona Intercollegiate will tee off on Monday, Jan. 27 and will lead directly into round two. Round three is set to take place on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Tee times will become available at a later time.
