Lobos Host MLK Invitational to Open Home Schedule

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—
The University of New Mexico opens up its loaded home indoor track and field schedule this Friday and Saturday hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Other than a few distance runners who ran at the Boston Opener in early December, this weekend will present the first opportunity for competition for the 2020 team, all of which are hoping to end their indoor season in the same location, at the Convention Center, site of the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. This weekend’s meet marks the first of four straight meets that UNM will host and one of six, including the MW Indoor Championship and the aforementioned NCAA Championship.

While that end goal is still seven weeks away, the Lobos look to establish solid opening marks and times to build on at the invitational.

The Lobos will be competing against some tops teams in the two-day meet, including Texas, LSU and Southern California, as well as regional teams NMSU and UTEP. In addition, three Mountain West schools will also be in attendance in San José State, San Diego State and Air Force.

The LSU Tigers enter ranked second in the men’s preseason poll with USC right behind them in third and Texas in fourth. The USC women rank first in the preseason poll with Texas fourth and LSU 16th, while the Lobo women enter the season sixth.

There will be a total of 36 events throughout the two days, beginning at 4 p.m. MT on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday, with UNM having 47 entries and three relay groups.

Fans can attend the meet using their Pride Pass or can purchase a ticket at the door. For those not able to attend, the meet will be streamed by FloTrack, found HERE, and will be updated through live results HERE.
