ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team (15-4, 4-2 MW) will face a big test on Saturday as the Lobos are set to take on the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels (10-9, 5-1 MW) at 4 p.m. MT (3 p.m. PT). UNLV recently surpassed UNM in the Mountain West standings and is now the lone team in second while the Lobos are tied for third.

Despite suffering the largest margin of defeat so far this season on Wednesday at Colorado State, the Lobos are 10-2 over their last 12 games. UNM’s bounce-back squad enters this weekend’s game undefeated on Saturdays and undefeated in games after a loss (3-0). 

UNLV enters Saturday’s game riding a five-win streak at home, the longest in four seasons (since 2015-16). The Runnin’ Rebels are 6-1 in their last seven matchups.

The Lobos are led by redshirt-senior JaQuan Lyle who averages 16.9 points per game on the season and 18.7 in conference play. 

UNLV’s leading scorer is junior Amauri Hardy who averages 14.9 points per game on the season and 14.7 in MW play. Sophomore Bryce Hamilton leads in conference play with 18.3 points per game.

SERIES HISTORY
UNLV leads the series 35-25 overall over the Lobos including a 20-9 record at home in Las Vegas. The last time the Lobos won in Las Vegas was in Paul Weir’s first season, an 85-81 upset victory on Jan. 17, 2018. Last time the two teams met was in Las Vegas last season on Jan. 22, 2019 where the Runnin’ Rebels claimed a 74-58 win over the Lobos. UNM is 3-2 over the last five meetings between the squads, but the last two have been Rebel wins.

THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 48-37 in his third year at the helm of the Lobos, 76-43 in his fourth season as a head coach. UNLV head coach T.J. Otzelberger is 10-9 in his first season at the helm of the Runnin’ Rebels, 90-42 in his career.
