Athletics Releases Fan Survey Results

The UNM Athletic Department has a commitment to continuing to enhance and improve our gameday experiences for all Lobo athletic events. As part of this initiative, the UNM Athletic Department asked UNM men’s basketball ticket purchasers in recent months to fill out a survey regarding the UNM men’s basketball gameday experience.

We had hundreds of responses, and we have pored through the data.  Below are some of the major conclusions that we have drawn from your feedback, as well as how we plan to address it to improve the experience for the best fans in the nation moving forward.

This is just the beginning of what we hope will evolve into requesting and digesting feedback for more of our sports and venues in the future.

Sound System Needs Work
This is one of the most common pieces of feedback we received.  We are aware that the sound system at Dreamstyle Arena Is not performing to the level that our fans expect.  We have taken several measures to improve the situation:
  • We now have sound engineers on site for every basketball game.
  • The Pit has undergone substantial testing and adjusting of the speakers and their output.
  • We rerouted the control of the volume and output to a new location.
  • We utilized a new software for music storage and playing, running off a system that is specifically designed for minimal audio feedback.

This will continue to be a work in process as the season continues.  We want you to know that we understand the problem exists and are constantly making efforts to improve the situation.

Some Want Individual Parking Passes Instead of Season-Long Passes
Before the season, we made a change for our parking pass holders for football and basketball. We decided to give fans one pass with every game on it, utilizing a punch hole system, rather than a single pass for every game. While many have stated they appreciated the new method, we heard from others that they would prefer the old method.
Due to your feedback we will continue to evaluate the best way to distribute parking passes next season. Stay tuned for more information on this process.
Season Ticket Distribution
We heard a lot of feedback about season ticket distribution and mailing, and we agree that the process did not go smoothly this season.  We incorporated a new ticketing system (Paciolan), and while we believe this will ultimately be a great thing for Lobo fans there have been some growing pains as we transition to the new process.
Many season ticket packages were delivered late.  This season we are putting together a timeline for season ticket renewals and distribution that should make this process smoother.  Fans will know when to expect the arrival of their tickets (it will be much earlier) and the communication process will be better.
Lobo fans will get more information this spring on when to expect renewals and when to expect their tickets to be delivered.  Stay tuned.
Demand For Halftime Entertainment
Your feedback indicated that halftime entertainment is important for many fans.
Fans can expect more attractions at halftime for the remainder of the season.  This will be an area of focus moving into next season as well.
Fans Are Not Aware of the Promotions
Your feedback indicated that many fans enjoy many of the promotions that we do but have not always been made aware of them before the game.
Because of this feedback, we have increased our investment in advertising for the remainder of the year:
  • We have invested even more heavily in digital advertising, and amended our strategy to be more focused on specific games.
  • We have also invested in some traditional advertising including newspaper and radio ads and will continue to do more moving forward.
  • Finally, we have adjusted our social media strategy and we have a plan to use the platforms of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to promote individual games and themes in a more straightforward way on social media.
Fans Want Stats on the Board More Often
Fans stated that they would like to see stats on the videoboard more during the game.
Following this, we have instituted a policy of putting the stats up during breaks in the action when the videoboard is not being used for other reasons.  We also plan to permanently have limited stats on the videoboard starting immediately.  Stay tuned.
Opening Video
Fans said the opening video needs to be more exciting and better encourage crowd interactivity.

Taking your feedback into account, we have updated the video with a new song to encourage fans to be more involved.  That video will play for the remainder of the year.

Student Attendance
Many students indicated that lack of transportation options was a major hurdle in getting to Lobo basketball games.
In an effort to bring more students down to the Pit, we worked with our transportation officials on campus and will begin to operate shuttles from campus to The Pit for all remaining games during the school year.  The shuttle will run for all men’s and women’s games after the start of the second semester.

In addition, we want to emphasize that students can park for free at all Lobo events.  We have increased our efforts to get this information out to students.

More Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy
Fans said they wanted to see more of our adored mascots, Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy at our games.
We are putting together a program to allow this to happen more often, however, we are facing a Louie and Lucy shortage and need your help!

If you know of any full-time UNM students who would be interested in being Lobo Louie or Lobo Lucy, please contact Spirit Coordinator Madison Baumann at mwarren@unm.edu.

Thank you for your feedback, Lobo fans.  We are always looking to do whatever we can to improve the experience for fans at UNM athletics events.  Thank you for your support and Go Lobos!
