Men’s Basketball Announces Staff Changes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball program has made a pair of staff changes, the program announced on Wednesday. Current director of operations, Ralph Davis, has been promoted to assistant coach and Robert Edwards has been added as video coordinator.

Davis moves into the assistant coach position after serving the last season as the director of operations and the season prior as the Lobos’ video coordinator. Davis joined the Lobos for the 2018-19 season after serving as the head coach at New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) for three seasons to cap a total of nine years at NMMI. While at NMMI, he also served as assistant and associate coach.

“Ralph has been promoted every year he’s been here and it’s a testament to his work ethic and loyalty,” head coach Paul Weir said. “Having been around basketball in our state most of his career, I hope to continue to watch his career grow going forward. His talents go far beyond the roles he’s played here for us and now he has an opportunity to demonstrate that.”

During his time at NMMI, Davis was instrumental in the recruitment of 16 players that moved on to the NCAA Division I level and another 15 that advanced to the collegiate scholarship level. He helped the squad to the NJCAA Region V tournament for just the fourth time in school history. After earning the head coach position, his accomplishments include coaching a trio of First Team All-Conference honorees and coaching the team to a .500 record in WJCAC for just the second time in the last 14 years. He also helped lead the 2017-18 team to a top-20 ranking in NJCAA in points per game and offensive rebounds per game.

Prior to his time at NMMI, Davis served as assistant coach under Pete Peterson at Texas A&M – Kingsville from 2007-09. Davis competed at both NMMI and Texas A&M – Kingsville. He was a WJCAC Honorable Mention selection and started all 30 games during his sophomore year with the Broncos. He would move on to Texas A&M – Kingsville and become a member of the first nationally-ranked Kingsville basketball team in more than 11 seasons.

“I am thrilled at the opportunity to continue my tenure with Lobo men’s basketball,” Davis said. “It has been a pleasure to work with Coach Weir and this University, and I look forward to making a purposeful impact on such a distinguished program.”

In addition to the promotion of Davis, the Lobos have added Robert Edwards, formerly of fellow Mountain West squad Nevada where he served as a graduate assistant coach and earned his master’s degree in 2019.

Edwards comes to New Mexico from Texas A&M Corpus Christi where he served as video coordinator for the 2019-20 season. He was responsible for preparing analytics and scout reports of opposing teams while overseeing all game film exchange, recording and clipping practices and games and more.

“Robert has a great pedigree from his training under Coach Miles, Coach Musselman and Coach Wilson,” Weir said. “He brings a contagious energy and work ethic and will make our program better immediately.”

Prior to his time at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, he served as graduate assistant coach at Nevada from August 2017 to May 2019 where he helped the Wolf Pack to a pair of Mountain West regular-season championships and two NCAA Tournament berths. His responsibilities included creating scouting graphics as well as analyzing opposing teams.

Edwards earned his bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in coaching from the University of Nebraska in Dec. 2016.
