Unified Statement from New Mexico Athletics

Unified Statement from New Mexico AthleticsUnified Statement from New Mexico Athletics

New Mexico Athletics has issued the following statement from Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez and its 13 head coaches:

UNM Athletics and The University of New Mexico are committed to the well-being of our student athletes. Before we commit to their success on their respective fields of play, in the classroom and in our community; we commit to their safety as human beings, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters and as parents.

That safety includes feeling respected, valued and accepted.

For generations, our black communities have experienced inhumane acts of racism, most recently on a street in Minneapolis but before that in Louisville and in Georgia and in too many other places. We recognize and acknowledge the systems of privilege, power and oppression which fuel and impact systemic racism and marginalization.

We all must do better!

We are committed to rejecting all discrimination based on race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, disability status, religion, gender, gender identity and sexual orientation or nationality.

We are committed to embracing the diversity of all of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and their families.

We are committed to continuing to be a positive agent for change and hope within our community.

We are committed to using our platform and empowering our student-athletes to use theirs
to speak for those who are silenced.

We are committed to continuing to provide an environment that promotes personal, academic, athletic, and social development as we develop Lobos for Life!

Let’s stand TOGETHER and let’s ALL be a part of CHANGE.
