ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a position where you almost never know a person’s name unless there is a screw-up, Steven Romero was well known around the Lobo Football program, and it was basically being perfect for four years.  Romero was voted by the fans to the #BestOfThe2000s team as the long snapper, becoming the 24th member of the squad.

Romero topped Joe Maese, who was actually drafted into the NFL as a long snapper, as Romero picked up 44.3% of the vote, topping Maese who had 28.1%.  Evan Jacobsen and Jon O’Brien finished right behind.

The series is a way to engage Lobo fans with the current situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Romero was the starting snapper as a freshman and never left the field, snapping for every field goal, extra point and punt over his four seasons.  The Albuquerque native’s trot onto the field in the first quarter of the 2016 Gildan New Mexico Bowl was his 50th game played, and it tied the UNM record for most games played in a career with 50.  Romero was also well known for his penchant to get downfield and down punts, make tackles and he had a nose for the ball, even recovering a fumble.  What he was also known for was being basically perfect, shuttling balls back with speed and precision to a pair of NFL stalwarts in Corey Bojorquez and Jason Sanders, who are also teammates on the #BestOfThe2000s team with Romero.
