INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — For the tenth consecutive year, The University of New Mexico had every sport easily above the mandated 930 mark in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate Institutional Report. The reports were released publicly by the NCAA. This year’s report, which is the 2018-19 report, saw 13 of UNM’s 16 sports equal or better last year’s four-year rolling score.
UNM sponsors 18 sports, but for APR purposes, indoor and outdoor track are combined.
The highest APR jumps were recorded by volleyball on the women’s side, which saw its four-year rolling score improve 11 points from a 984 to a 995. On the men’s side, basketball had a 10-point improvement, from 985 to a 995.
Last Tuesday, UNM had three programs; men’s basketball, men’s golf, and women’s golf earn public recognition from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10% of all Division I schools in a sport in APR. APR data for the 2018-19 report is a four-year rolling score that include APR data from 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.
APR is a combination of eligibility and retention scores. For each semester, a student-athlete can account for two points, one for returning to school, and one for being eligible. The total points accumulated is divided by the total points possible, and then multiplied by 1000 to get the raw score.
Nine sports recorded perfect 1000s for the 2018-19 academic year, up from five a year ago. On the men’s side, basketball, cross country, golf and tennis scored 1000, while golf, soccer, tennis, track and volleyball had perfect 1,000 scores of the women. This is the 14th year of that APR scores have been issued.
One of the keys to UNM’s APR success is the Lobo Center for Student-Athlete Success, which houses UNM’s athletics’ Student Success Managers, who oversee the academic progress of UNM’s student-athletes. The LCSAS has three complete computer labs, meeting and private study spaces, classroom, and tutoring stations as well as housing UNM’s Student Success Staff.
