ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Evroy Thompson’s Lobo career was seven years in the making, getting to campus in 1999, and graduating after the 2005 season, with a two-year Mormon Mission in between. Thompson’s big 2005 season, which included two Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week awards, certainly stuck in the minds of voters, as he was voted as the second of three defensive linemen to the #BestOfThe2000s team. He is the 16th member of the 30-person squad.
Thompson narrowly topped D.J. Renteria and Tyler Donaldson in the voting, which has been going on all month on UNM’s Football Twitter account.
Congrats to our second defensive lineman voted onto the #BestOfThe2000s team, it’s Evroy Thompson, who joins Michael Tuohy on the squad. Evroy is the 16th member of the squad! Final DL poll coming up! #GoLobos pic.twitter.com/1xYAemQZ3m

The series is a way to engage Lobo fans with the current situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thompson was twice named the Mountain West Player of the Week in 2005, winning for his work against San Diego State and the Missouri. That Missouri game was the subject of a #LoboClassics series, a 45-35 win in Columbia. Thompson’s 28-yard touchdown on a fumble return wa a key moment in that game. Thompson was a first team All-Mountain West selection in 2005 after recording 40 tackles, 9.5 for loss and 5.0 sacks.
Alright, final DL poll is going to be another barnburner for the #BestOfThe2000s team! D.J. Renteria advanced from the last poll, finishing second. This one ends at noon tomorrow! #GoLobos
