ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — If there was any thought that Day 2 of Lobo spring football practice would be any different or lighter or easier … think again. The Lobos were sharp, and the defense excelled in the second of 15 spring practices, and now the team gets one day of rest. At least from the field. There is still lifting and meetings breaking down the first two days, but head coach Danny Gonzales likes what he sees.
“Right now we have guys competing and their attitudes are great. They are learning how we as a staff expect them to play,” he said, noting that UNM ‘s large senior contingent needs to lead the way. “We have a big group of seniors, and I meet with them separately, but they have to be the leaders. If the coaches are the leaders it doesn’t work. Those guys need to take that ownership and I bring the younger guys along. I think they are doing that.”
Another perfect day for football! Here’s a little of what it looked like. Back at it with open practice on Friday 9:45 to 11:45 am #GoLobos pic.twitter.com/upK7e3SPD5

Practice Notes: New walk-on kicker and punter Jared Long, from Del Norte High School, had a good day in the early session of practice on field goals, hitting on his longest attempt of 42 yards … UNM has a set of brothers on the team as Mathias Bertram has joined his brother Ben Bertram on the squad … Joey Noble has been practicing with the linebackers after playing as a down defensive lineman last year … for the second straight day, Elijah Lilly has a ridiculous catch on a deep ball … Josh Foley, who played at New Mexico State last year and led the Aggies in rushing yards against Alabama, is officially on the squad and wearing No. 28 … his brother Tim wore 27 when he played at UNM … Dion Hunter, who wore 44 at Cleveland High School, is wearing 41 for UNM with 44 retired for Brian Urlacher.
