Boneta Leads Lobos Through Round One in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team wrapped up round one of the Southern Highlands Collegiate hosted by UNLV in a tie for 12th place on Sunday. Freshman Albert Boneta led the Lobos in the round, shooting two over, 74 to land tied for 21st.

Boneta shot a par-4 average of 4.00 (E) on the day to tie for third in the category while his four birdies tied for fourth overall. The freshman also tied for fourth in par-5 scoring, shooting an average of 5.00 (E). Boneta is sitting just two strokes away from the top-10 and three strokes away from the top-5.  

Landing just one stroke behind at three over, 75 was sophomore Ignacio Arcaya who finished tied for 28th. Arcaya shot a par-3 average of 2.75 (-1) to tie for second in the category while his team-leading 13 pars tied for fourth.

Junior Galven Green also shot a par-3 average of 2.75 (-1) in the round as he finished in a tie for 40th at five over, 77. Green shot 11 pars in the round, good for the sixth most overall.

Following by one stroke was sophomore Sam Choi and redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair who each shot six over, 78 to tie for 59th. Choi and Sinclair each shot par-3 averages of 3.25 (+1) to tie for fourth in the category, while Choi’s par-5 scoring average 5.00 (E) also tied for fourth overall.

Sinclair registered the Lobos’ only eagle of the round, happening on his 14th hole of the day, hole #5 (par 4).

As a team, UNM shot a team score of 304 (+16) to land in a three-way tie with No. 1 Pepperdine and TCU. The Lobos led the competition in par-3 scoring with their average of 3.10 (+2), while they registered a combined 49 pars and 10 birdies on the day. New Mexico is sitting just two strokes behind 11th-place No. 3 Georgia Tech (302, +14) and four strokes behind the eighth-place tie between No. 7 Duke, No. 10 SMU and UCF (300, +12).

Leading the competition after 18 holes is No. 36 Southern California which shot one under, 287 to finish five strokes ahead of second-place No. 8 Texas (292, +4). UCLA occupies the third-place spot as the Bruins shot a five over, 293.

Individually, Georgia’s Davis Thompson and Southern California’s Yuxin Lin are tied for first, both having shot scores of five under, 67.

Round two of the Southern Highlands Collegiate is set to tee off Monday at 10 a.m. MT and will be followed by round three on Tuesday.
