ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team has win five straight, but the team might be facing its toughest test to date, as the squad heads due east to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock on Sunday morning. The match will now start at 10 a.m., a move of two hours earlier due to some expected wins in the early afternoon. The match can be watched online live here.
UNM’s five-match winning streak includes some big name opponents in the wreckage, as the Lobos have posted wins over Utah, BYU and Michigan State in winning five straight. The keys for UNM have been basically everyone, as everyone has seemingly contributed in some way. The streak started with a clinching win by Facundo Bermejo in a 4-3 victory over BYU. Jake Tronsdon jumped into the singles lineup against Michigan State and got UNM off to a 4-0 sweep, and both Stepan Holis and Raul Dobai have picked up clinchers along with veteran Dominic West. UNM’s advantage is there is no one player a team can say “beat that guy and we will win” because UNM has shown to be strong from really one through seven.
Against Texas Tech though, UNM will have to be at its best, facing a 10-4 Red Raider squad that is perfect at home at 4-0. All four of the losses have come to nationally-ranked teams, and Texas Tech does have a win over No. 20 Mississippi State 4-2 and a 4-1 win over No. 27 Middle Tennessee State, a former Lobo opponent. The Red Raiders are coming off a pair of Friday wins, beating New Mexico State 4-0 and Tulsa 4-1.
