Lobos Finish Fourth After Day 1 at Rebel Beach Invite

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished fourth out of 11 squads after the first day of the Rebel Beach Invitational hosted by UNLV and Long Beach State on Monday. The Lobos had a pair of players finish the two rounds in the top 10 of the individual leader board.

Sophomore Kamie Hamada led the Lobos on the day, finishing fifth overall in a field of 66. She shot back-to-back scores of one under, 71 for her two-round total of 142 (-2). Hamada registered seven birdies on the day to tie for sixth in the category and her par-4 scoring average of 3.90 places her tied for fourth.

Hamada is sitting just six strokes behind first-place Gabriela Ruffels of USC who posted a score of 136 (-8) through the first two rounds.

Freshman Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana also finished atop the leaderboard after day one, tying for sixth overall, just one stroke behind Hamada. Lertsadwattana shot one under, 71 in round one followed by an even 72 to finish with a day-one total of 143 (-1). Lersadwattana finished with a par-3 scoring average of 2.88 (-1) to tie for third in the category while collecting six birdies.

Freshman Lauren Lehigh registered a 74 (+2) in round one and 75 (+3) in round two to finish for a day-one total of 149 (+5) and tying for 26th. Lehigh also finished with 25 pars over 36 holes, fifth most for the day’s competition.

Freshman Chloe Lauer, who competed as an individual, was the next Lobo on the leader board. Lauer posted a six-stroke improvement between rounds one and two after finishing with a 79 (+7) and a 73 (+1), respectively. She collected 26 pars on the day, fourth most overall.

Rounding out the competition for the Lobos was junior Caroline Jansson and freshman Alice Rindestig who finished tied for 57th and 61st, respectively. Jansson registered a four-stroke improvement between rounds one and two, shooting an 80 (+8) in round one followed by a 76 (+4) in round two. Rindestig also registered a four-stoke improvement on the day shooting an 81 (+9) and a 77 (+5).

No. 3 USC leads the tournament with a 558 (-18) on the day. Mountain West competitor Fresno State is in second place with a two-round total of 572 (-4) followed by BYU in third with a score of 586 (+10).

As a team, UNM shot scores of 296 (+8) and 294 (+6) in rounds one and two, respectively to finish just four strokes behind BYU. The Lobos led the Rebel Beach Invitational in par-3 scoring with a 3.05 average.

UNM will be back in action to conclude round three at the Rebel Beach Invitational on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 9:00 a.m. MT/ 8:00 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
