ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team (16-7, 5-5 MW) is set to take on Fresno State (7-14, 3-7 MW) for the second time this season in its first repeat conference matchup of the season on Saturday in Fresno. The Lobos earned a victory over the Bulldogs at home on Jan. 7 (78-64) and are therefore going for the sweep on the weekend.
In the teams’ last meeting in The Pit, the teams posted four first-half ties before the Lobos went off, scoring 11 straight points to go into the half up by four en route to the eventual victory. Redshirt-junior Vance Jackson led the Lobos in the contest with 29 points while redshirt-senior JaQuan Lyle posted UNM’s first double-double in points and assists since Feb. 2018.
UNM heads into Saturday’s game on a two-loss streak after dropping a pair of tough contests to Nevada on the road (96-74) and No. 4 San Diego State at home (85-57). The Lobos are still down four starters from the original starting five that kicked off the season 11-2, including Jackson and Lyle.
Fresno State recently broke its own two-loss streak with a 79-68 win over Air Force on the road on Tuesday.
The Lobos are led by three active players averaging in double digits including senior Corey Manigault (12.0), redshirt-junior Zane Martin (10.6) and redshirt-sophomore Vante Hendrix (10.1).
Fresno State is led by seniors New Williams (12.7) and Nate Grimes (12.7) as well as freshman Orlando Robinson (12.6). It was Robinson who led with 16 points and 12 rebounds the last time the teams met.

The Lobos lead the series with the Bulldogs 17-14 overall but are just 3-11 on the road in Fresno. In the teams’ last meeting, UNM earned a 78-64 win at home on Jan. 7.
Last time the Lobos traveled to Fresno, the Bulldogs earned an 82-70 win on Feb. 2, 2019. Fresno State is 5-2 over the teams’ last seven meetings, the last three straight in Fresno have gone to the Bulldogs.
Just one of the last four meetings between the squads has been in Fresno. The last time UNM won in Fresno was Jan. 2, 2016.

Head coach Paul Weir is 49-40 in his third year at the helm of the Lobos, 77-46 in his fourth season as a head coach. Fresno State head coach Justin Hutson is 30-23 in his second season at the helm of the Bulldogs, the same in his career.
