Men's Golf Fifth After Day One in Arizona

TUCSON, ARIZ. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished fifth out of 14 squads after day one of the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona on Monday. The Lobos improved six spots between the first two rounds, chopping nine strokes off of their first-round score in round two.

Due to darkness, the entire field was unable to complete round two. While the Lobos did finish the round, the teams that did not (UTEP, ULM, Washington State, NM State) will do so Tuesday morning prior to the third and final round.

It was sophomore Sam Choi who led the Lobos on day one, shooting back-to-back scores of one under, 70 to finish round two tied for seventh at 140 (-2). Choi registered 26 pars on the day to tie for second overall in the category and his par-4 average of 4.00 (E) is tied for fifth. Choi is sitting just four strokes out of first place which is held by Arizona’s Trevor Werbylo (136, -6).

A pair of individuals followed for New Mexico on the leaderboard, sophomore Roy Choi and redshirt-sophomore Brad Cole who each finished the day tied for 21st at two over, 144. Cole led the team in both par-3 scoring (2.88,-1) and in birdies, recording nine across his two rounds of work.

Three Lobos shot two-round totals of four over, 146 including individual senior Sam Dickey, junior Galven Green and sophomore Ignacio Arcaya. Arcaya improved 19 spots between his two rounds after shooting an even 71 in round two following his 75 (+4) in round one. Arcaya also tied for third overall in par-5 scoring, averaging 4.50 (-3) on par 5s. The trio of Lobos are tied for 38th after the first day of action.

Freshman Albert Boneta saw a seven-stroke improvement between round one and round two as he shot an even second-round score of 71 following a first-round 78 (+7). He carded the Lobos’ only eagle on the day, on his fifth hole of round two, hole #8. Redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair followed by two strokes, finishing day one with a two-round total of 151 (+9).

As a team, UNM shot scores of 293 (+9) and 284 (E) in each of the first two rounds, respectively, to improve six spots on the leaderboard. The Lobos lead the competition in pars (115) and are tied for third in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.15 (+6).

The Lobos are just three strokes away from fourth-place St. Mary’s (574, +6) and six strokes away from third-place Washington (571, +3). Host Arizona occupies the first-place spot with a two-round total of 558 (-11) and a six-stroke lead over second-place Baylor (564, -4).

Round two of the Arizona Intercollegiate is set to resume Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. and will be directly followed by round three.
