ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — On Tuesday, Jan. 21, The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will be doing more than just taking on San José State in The Pit. The Lobos, while continuing their participation in the American Cancer Society’s “Suits and Sneakers” campaign, have partnered with the Children’s Cancer Fund of NM for the BeLIVe campaign, a campaign centered around Lobo assistant coach Jerome Robinson’s niece, Olivia.
Nine-year-old Olivia (“Liv”) was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma (cancer of the central nervous system) in May and the Robinson family has been spreading the word in Albuquerque – and beyond. The campaign has taken fire with the hashtag “BeLIVe.” Lobo players and other fans, friends and family have taken to social media to share what they “LIV” to do in effort to show support for Olivia and other children like her across the nation, as well as continue to raise awareness for pediatric cancer.

Each year, basketball teams across the country participate in Coaches vs Cancer’s “Suits And Sneakers Week” in effort to help raise awareness and funds to save lives. In preparation for “Suits and Sneakers Week” the American Cancer Society released this week that the Cancer death rate declined 29 percent from 1991-2017 including a 2.2 percent drop from 2016-2017, the largest single-year drop in cancer mortality ever reported.
On Tuesday, Robinson’s niece will be in attendance in The Pit as well as several other children and their families that are part of the Children’s Cancer Fund of NM.
Thank you again @krqe and @davidromerotv for having our amazing Pediatric Cancer ambassadors this morning.
