Lobo Women XC Holds Second in USTFCCCA Rankings

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—  Although The University of New Mexico cross country team hasn’t competed since the initial home opener on Aug. 31 and won’t take the course for another two weeks at the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 4, the Lobos remained second in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country National Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.

The Lobos remained behind Colorado for the top spot, and sits just 10 points behind the Buffaloes. UNM picked up two first-place votes and 306 points in the week one poll, six points ahead of No. 3 Washington. Arkansas (fifth) and BYU (sixth) also received two first-place votes each and Colorado received five.

The top four teams remained the same from the preseason poll with Michigan in fourth at 282 points. Arkansas jumped three spots between the two polls as did North Carolina State to move up to seventh. The closest Mountain West school to New Mexico in the rankings was Boise State, who checked in at 13th with 203 votes, while Air Force was receiving votes in the poll.

UNM received eight less points and two first-place votes fewer than in the preseason poll released on Aug. 27.
