Former Lobo Sam Haggerty called up to Mets
NEW YORK – With the calendar turning to September, and one more month left in the Major League Baseball regular season, teams across MLB are bolstering their rosters with a bevy of “September Callups”. Among those this year is former Lobo baseball player Sam Haggerty as the New York Mets purchased his contract from AAA Syracuse on Sunday.
Haggerty played for the Lobos from 2013-15 and was a 24th-round draft selection of the Cleveland Indians in 2015. Haggerty would play in the Indians organization until just prior to the 2019 season as he was a part of a trade between the Indians and the New York Mets.
After the trade, Haggerty was assigned to AA Binghamton where he played a majority of the season. Haggerty also spent time in short season A ball on a rehab assignment and was called up to AAA Syracuse in mid-August. In the 12 games at AAA prior to his callup to the Mets, Haggerty was hitting .310 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBIs.
As a Lobo, Haggerty was a three-year starting infielder. In his freshman season of 2013, Haggerty was the Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year/All-MW Second Team and also earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Honors. The following season, Haggerty was an All-MW First Team selection.
When he makes his big league debut, Haggerty will become the 11th Lobo all-time to play in MLB.
