UNM opens season in exhibition with a 3-0 shutout over Colorado School of Mines

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In the first exhibition game of the 2019 season, The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team shutout the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers 3-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon. UNM junior, Leilani Baker, had a hand in two of the Lobos’ three goals as she provided an assist on the first goal and netted the third and final goal to close out the match.

The Lobos were quick to put themselves on the board as the first goal came within the first 20 minutes of the game. Junior Cami Floth was the first of the Lobos to find the back of the net at the 16:09 mark off of an assist from Baker. The shot was placed just over Mines goalie Shannon Mooney’s reach allowing the Lobos to jump ahead 1-0.

UNM continued to apply pressure at the net during the remainder of the first half with two more shots on goal and closed out the first 45 minutes with the 1-0 advantage.

It was not long after the second half began that the Lobos netted another goal, this time from redshirt junior Gwen Maly at the 57:15 mark. Redshirt sophomore Aspen Headrick provided the assist that led Maly to an ideal position in front of the net where she finished the opportunity, giving the Lobos a two-goal lead.

The final goal saw Baker beat the goalkeeper off of a long service ball. With the keeper beat and from afar, Baker tucked the ball in the lower right corner of the net. The goal solidified the shutout win for the Lobos at 3-0.

The Lobos play one last exhibition game on August 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex against CSU Pueblo. The Lobos will then open up regular season play at home versus No. 22-ranked Texas Tech University on August 25.
